One company might be slightly cheaper than another, but it’s rare to find prices that are dramatically lower. That leaves many people wondering whether all energy suppliers are charging the same.

The reality is that every supplier operates within the same energy market. Before they can supply electricity or gas to your home, they have to buy it from the wholesale market. Because suppliers are buying energy from the same market, they all face similar costs before a single unit of electricity or gas reaches your property.

Buying energy is only part of the picture. Suppliers also contribute towards maintaining the electricity and gas networks, industry operating costs, government schemes, and customer services such as billing, meter support, and account management. Since these costs are shared across the industry, there is often less room for suppliers to offer significantly cheaper prices.

Another reason prices appear so similar is the energy price cap. For customers on a standard variable tariff, the price cap limits the maximum amount suppliers can charge for each unit of energy and the standing charge. While suppliers can still compete on price, the cap helps keep tariffs within a relatively similar range.

That doesn’t mean every tariff is identical. Some suppliers offer better fixed deals, while others focus on electric vehicle tariffs, renewable electricity, or smart home products. The cheapest option will often depend on how much energy you use, when you use it, and the type of tariff that best suits your household.

Should you still compare suppliers?

Absolutely. Even if prices appear similar, comparing tariffs is still worthwhile. A lower standing charge, a better fixed rate, or a tariff designed around your lifestyle could reduce your overall costs. Rather than looking at the headline price alone, it’s worth comparing the full tariff and thinking about how you use energy throughout the year.

Energy suppliers compete in many ways, but they all operate within the same market and face many of the same underlying costs. Once you understand how energy pricing works, it becomes much easier to see why tariffs often look similar and why finding the right tariff is about more than simply choosing the lowest price.
